Tensions Escalating between the Tigrai State and the Federal Government of Ethiopia

The governing party of the regional state of Tigray said the territory would not comply with, among other things, the rules, orders, and regulations to be implemented by the federal government after the end of its current term in office on October 05/2020.

Asmelash, who was the former chief government whip, said that both the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR), the House of Federation (HoF), Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Council of Ministers (CoM) had a constitutional term limit on October 05

Getachew Reda, another TPLF executive member, stated that the statement made by Asmelash was that of the Tigray regional state’s position. According to Getachew, Tigray area “will possibly be beholden” to rules , regulations and directives to be passed by the current legislative until October 05, anything beyond that in Tigray will not be legal.

The 6th election for the Regional Council, which was subsequently established on 24 September, was unilaterally conducted by the Tigray regional state. TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) has also been named as the regional president by the newly established council.

Asmelash also said that after October 05, the regional state would recall all its HoPR and HoF members on the grounds that the region will not become part of a “illegitimate government.” Asked what the way out would be, he referred to a recent statement released by the Ethiopian Federalist Forces Alliance. “Among others, the statement released on September 17 suggested” the establishment of an autonomous technocratic caretaker government whose composition represents the diversity of the citizens of Ethiopia.
