Addis Ababa-According to the Ethiopian Communication Authority, two new foreign telecommunications operators will enter the Ethiopian market by April 2021 once the due process of competitive bid evaluation is completed.
The DirectorGeneral of the Authority, Balcha Reba, briefed journalists on the progress of the telecommunications reform on Monday, saying that the official announcement of the two eligible bidders would begin within the next 15 days. The focus of the ongoing telecom reform has been on boosting digital growth, building a globally standardized telecom industry, improving the financial capacity of the sector, and growing telecommunications accessibility.
Some 12 telecom companies have submitted their expressed interest in entering the Ethiopian telecom market, while it has been suggested that the opportunity is also open to others.
Bidders range from the Global Alliance for Ethiopia (a group of Vodafone, Vodacom and Safaricom telecom operators) to the alleged Etisalat and MTNs.
It should be recalled that the Government has adopted a two-fold decision opening up the telecommunications sector: the sale of a minority interest to the incumbent operator, Ethio Telecom, and the issuance of two additional licenses for telecommunications operators.
In 1932, Ethiopia became a member of the International Union for Telecommunication (ITU).
