Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR), Addis Ababa, October 21/2020, said Parliament will take action against parliamentary representatives of the regional state of Tigray who are absent from the House.AccordingFanaBC quoted the Speaker as saying that “if they continue to stop meeting, administrative steps will be taken against them,” the parliament is extending the invitation to the members, the news outlet said without specifying the said steps. It also quoted the speaker as saying that any issue should be solved by conversation and in a lawful manner, not by breaching the law.
The 6th election for a regional council, which was subsequently established on 24 September, was unilaterally conducted by the regional state. TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) has also been named as the regional president by the newly established council.
President SahleWork Zewde declared on October 05 the new beginning of the incumbent’s mandate to rule, after its extension had been recommended and accepted by the House of Federation by the Council of Constitutional Inquiry. In her speech at the joint session of the HoPR and the House of Federation (HoF), the President kicked off the incumbent’s mandate by presenting main policy areas for the Fiscal Year 2020/2021.All but one of the 38 members of the HoPR TPLF and eight of the HoF were absent from the joint session. On October 06, the next day, HoF adopted a decision for the Federal Government to sever ties with the Tigray Regional State Council and the TPLF Executive Board; it also claimed that the Federal Government would restrict its working relations with regional city and Kebele administrations only. Further measures to postpone the federal budget were also introduced by the HoF on October 07.
