Sustained attacks against civilians have been happing in Benishangul Gumuz regional state, Metekel Zone, since September 2020, according a reliable source including the government media.
The brutal attacks on defenseless civilians in numerous locations in the Metekel region have left hundreds dead and thousands displaced. The lack of a definitive account on the part of the responsible government officials, both at the federal and regional levels, means that the exact number of triggers is difficult to achieve, leaving victims’ stories vulnerable to speculation by numerous media outlets and social media activists.
So far, the security situation has continued to intensify, though there is still no clear statement on the history of the perpetrators other than accounts of arrests, both by police officers and local authorities, and some of the steps taken against the “unidentified armed militia,” which the group authorities referred to as the perpetrators.
The vast area has been under federal rule since the end of September, and according to Alemayehu, who is local resident at Bulan Wereda, there is currently an uneasy peace coupled with ongoing efforts by local authorities to rehabilitate displaced persons.
The metekel Zone Administration told to the media, the perpetrators may be “an orchestrated party of members of the opposition parties and discharged military officers.” The then Regional State Police Deputy Commissioner, Commander Nega Jarra, said in an interview that members of a political party whose name he did not want to mention were behind the attacks.
